Three hundred kilometres of lagoon, forest and cliff-top golf
The N2 between Mossel Bay and Storms River is the drive every African road trip is built around: indigenous forest on one shoulder, the Indian Ocean on the other, and a chain of lagoons, passes and beach towns strung between them. It also happens to hold the densest concentration of great golf on the continent — Fancourt's three courses at George, Oubaai on the cliffs, Simola above the Knysna River, Pezula on the headland at Noetzie. Warm water, no malaria, no long transfers: everything is inside a two-hour drive of everything else.

Wilderness & the lakes
Where the rivers stop just short of the sea
Twenty minutes east of George the road drops into Wilderness: a lagoon, a long empty beach and five interconnected lakes behind the dunes. Paddle up the Touw River to a waterfall, walk the Half-Collared Kingfisher trail, or take the Map of Africa viewpoint above the Kaaimans for the picture everyone comes back with. It is also the quiet base for Fancourt and Oubaai golf.

Knysna & the Heads
A lagoon town guarded by two sandstone cliffs
Knysna's estuary opens to the sea through the Heads — two cliffs with a channel between them so treacherous it was once declared unnavigable. Oysters on the Waterfront, the ferry to Featherbed Nature Reserve on the western Head, the yellowwood forest inland where the last free-ranging Knysna elephants still live. Simola sits high above the river on one side of town, Pezula on the headland at the other.

Plettenberg Bay
The bay the whales use as a nursery
Eleven kilometres of beach, Robberg Peninsula walking out into the ocean at one end, and southern right whales calving inside the bay between July and November. Boat-based whale watching and permitted swim-with-dolphin operators run out of Central Beach; Robberg's 9 km circuit is the finest coastal walk on the route. Plett is where most groups take their non-golf day.

Tsitsikamma & Storms River
Forest, gorge, and the world's original bungee
The eastern end of the route is the wildest: fynbos cliffs dropping straight into whitewater, the suspension bridges over the Storms River Mouth, kayak-and-lilo trips into the gorge, and Bloukrans — 216 m, the highest commercial bungee bridge on earth. The tree-canopy walkway and the Big Tree, an 800-year-old yellowwood, are the gentle version.

Hermanus & the whale coast
Land-based whale watching, better than most boats
Strictly the gateway rather than the Garden Route proper, but every Cape itinerary threads through it: Hermanus's Cliff Path runs 12 km along the edge of Walker Bay where southern rights come within metres of the rocks, and the town keeps the world's only whale crier. Add Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, or the Hemel-en-Aarde valley's pinot noir on the way through.

Southern right whales, often from the cliff path
Hermanus is the best land-based whale watching in the world. In season the southern rights come into Walker Bay to calve and you can watch them breach from the cliff path, or go out on a permitted boat.

A boat across the lagoon to the Heads, oysters and a cold Chardonnay at the featherbed side, then back up to Pezula for a clifftop nine. Add the Knysna forest or a Tsitsikamma canopy walk if you have a spare morning.
