Golf on the edge of the wildest park in Africa

Kruger is the size of Wales: 20,000 square kilometres of knobthorn, marula and mopane running 350 km north from the Crocodile River to the Limpopo, holding roughly 1,500 lion, 12,000 elephant and every one of the Big Five. What makes it extraordinary for a golfer is the geography — the park's southern boundary is also the tee box. Leopard Creek sits on a bluff above the Crocodile River looking directly into Kruger; Skukuza Golf Club is inside the park with no fence at all; Sabi River Sun runs along the Sabie at Hazyview. You play in the morning, you are on a game drive at four, and the escarpment of the Panorama Route — canyon, waterfalls, God's Window — is an hour behind you.

Where Leopard Creek looks straight into the park

The southern boundary of Kruger is a river, and Leopard Creek was built along the far bank of it at Malelane. From the 13th green and the famous par-five 13th tee you look down onto sandbanks with crocodile hauled out and elephant coming to drink; the course has a resident hippo pool and a rule book that includes what to do when a herd walks the fairway. It is Gary Player's masterpiece and has hosted the Alfred Dunhill Championship since 1999 — routinely rated the best course in Africa.

Skukuza & the Sabie River

Nine holes inside the park, no fence anywhere

Skukuza is the park's headquarters, set on the Sabie River in the game-rich south — and its nine-hole golf course is entirely unfenced, shared with impala, warthog, hippo out of the river at night and, often enough, lion. Local rules cover what happens when your ball lands near a crocodile. The Sabie itself is the wildlife spine of southern Kruger: Lower Sabie's causeway and the H4-1 road are the most reliable big-cat drive in the whole park.

Big cats and the Big Five

The highest leopard density on the continent

Southern Kruger and the adjoining Sabi Sand reserves hold the most habituated leopard in Africa — the reason film crews have worked here for forty years. Morning drives leave in the dark and run until the heat comes up; afternoon drives finish with a sundowner and a spotlit return. Rangers work a radio network, so a single sighting is shared across the sector, and a good three-night stay reliably produces all five.

The Panorama Route

Canyon, waterfalls and the edge of the world

An hour west of the park the land climbs 1,500 m onto the Drakensberg escarpment, and the drive along it is the finest scenic road in the country. The Blyde River Canyon is the third-largest canyon on earth and the greenest — the Three Rondavels are the picture everybody takes. God's Window drops away into the Lowveld with 250 km of bush below, and Bourke's Luck Potholes are cylindrical rock sculptures cut by two rivers meeting. Highland Gate's high-altitude golf and the Dullstroom trout waters are on the same plateau.

Lisbon, Berlin, Mac Mac — the escarpment's water

Between Graskop and Sabie the escarpment throws off a chain of waterfalls in a twenty-minute radius: Lisbon Falls at 94 m, the twin Berlin Falls, Mac Mac's split cascade and the Pinnacle Rock quartzite tower. Graskop's Big Swing and the glass Gorge Lift give you the drop from the other direction, and Pilgrim's Rest — an intact 1870s gold-rush village — is on the way through.

Rock sculpture, then the road back down

Where the Treur River meets the Blyde, two centuries of swirling water have drilled a labyrinth of pools and shafts through the yellow sandstone — Bourke's Luck Potholes, crossed by footbridges. Below the escarpment the road drops through the Kowyn Pass into the bushveld proper: knobthorn savanna, riverine forest along the Sabie, and the golf and lodge belt at Hazyview and Malelane where most golf-and-game weeks are based.
